Building Tomorrow’s Leaders: Inside Dweck Properties’ Comprehensive Training Ecosystem
Dweck Properties has built its business and culture around a simple but powerful belief: when you invest deeply in your people, they thrive. That success translates directly to exceptional experiences for both residents and employees. This philosophy is woven into everything they do, reflected in their core value of “Stay curious,” which encourages continuous learning and growth at every level of the organization.
Over the years, Dweck has built and refined something remarkable: a comprehensive training ecosystem designed to support employees throughout their entire career journey. This deep dive into these innovative programs demonstrates Dweck’s unwavering commitment to employee growth and development. From the moment someone joins the team, whether as an intern or experienced professional, they are welcomed into a culture where learning is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged, and every employee has access to the tools and support they need to reach their full potential.
Sarah Cahill, VP of Learning & Customer Experience, explains Dweck’s approach: “Part of my role is ensuring team members have support from the moment they start for their entire careers. We don’t invest in people just to keep them at Dweck. We really think about people as people, no matter where they go. We always say that Dweck should be a great place to come from.”
The company has reimagined corporate training, moving beyond sterile conference rooms and traditional lectures. Their signature approach emphasizes connection, engagement, and hands-on learning through formats such as: on-site road shows with small focused groups; interactive workshops featuring movement, games, and practical activities; equipment-based training where maintenance teams work with actual tools; creative simulations like factory exercises where managers experience different leadership styles; and customer service role-plays that put theory into immediate practice. The Dweck Academy – “Delivering Outstanding Customer Experiences” – is a program that all positions and new hires go through, including HQ. It covers CX fundamentals, our CARE communication model, customer pledge/promises, Empowerment with a final scenario role play and written test at the end to become certified, all over the course of two days. The emphasis on joy and memorability creates engaged learners who become engaged employees, benefiting everyone from trainees to customers.
The crown jewel of Dweck’s training programs is their comprehensive Dweck Academy, which includes both a customer experience and maintenance development track.
The crown jewel of Dweck’s training programs is their comprehensive Dweck Academy, which includes both a customer experience and maintenance development track. Everyone in the company, including the HQ team, is expected to be Dweck Customer Experience Certified. For our Maintenance teams, there is an additional, specialized Certified Maintenance Professional (CMP) certification, which exceeds traditional classroom learning to provide immersive experiences that prepare maintenance professionals for real-world challenges. This program covers 6 core technical maintenance skill areas: Safety, HVAC, Plumbing, General Maintenance, Appliances, and Electrical.
In this program, participants don’t just learn about equipment – they work with it. Training sessions feature actual tools, systems, and scenarios that maintenance teams encounter daily. From troubleshooting HVAC systems to mastering plumbing repairs, participants gain practical experience in controlled environments before applying their skills in the field. This tactile approach ensures that by the time team members complete the program, they’re not just certified, but confident and capable.
Beyond maintenance, Dweck’s other career track-specific training programs excel in preparing employees for the complex interpersonal and decision-making aspects of property management. These programs heavily emphasize role-playing exercises and situational decision-making that mirror what employees face daily. Whether it’s handling difficult conversations, navigating lease renewals, or managing emergency situations, participants engage in realistic scenarios that test their judgment and communication skills. Through scenario-based exercises, employees practice de-escalation techniques, learn to read customer cues, and develop the confidence to handle diverse situations with professionalism and empathy. These components challenge participants to think critically about policy applications, ethical considerations, and creative problem-solving. It ensures that employees don’t just know the rules, but understand how to apply them thoughtfully in complex, real-world situations.
Another innovative program in the Dweck arsenal is the Assistant Property Manager in Training (APMIT) program, a pathway that allows excelling team members and summer interns from Virginia Tech to transition directly into management roles once they graduate, bypassing traditional leasing requirements and accelerating career development based on aptitude. Many Virginia Tech interns have gone on to have successful careers at Dweck Properties and beyond after participating in the extensive summer training program.
Furthering the approach of giving new employees the chance to learn from seasoned leaders is the Dweck Mentors program. This program appoints exemplary employees, vetted by management, who spend 90 days working intensively with new team members. These relationships often extend well beyond the initial commitment, creating lasting professional bonds and deep coach/mentor relationships. Dweck also offers Leasing Summits twice a year that bring teams together to share best practices and prepare for seasonal changes. In addition to the Leasing Summits and Mentors, Dweck also runs a Social Media Marketers program where the Marketing Department mentors and trains designated team members on content development, brand representation, and the technical skills required to run results-driven social media channels. And finally, the company partners with the Institute of Real Estate Management, IREM, to help Property Managers and Assistant Property Managers pass their exams to receive Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) designations.
At Dweck’s headquarters, the training team puts together a variety of programs featuring leadership development using proven methodologies through books and resources such as Brené Brown’s “Dare to Lead,” The Conscious Leadership Group, and various self-awareness and self-assessment tools to keep all team members, regardless of position, growing and learning. While Dweck could stop just there and declare the work “done,” their training ecosystem only expands and reinforces itself. Dweck refuses to limit employees to narrow career tracks, actively promoting cross-training opportunities that allow exploration across departments. Post-session assessments with knowledge checks ensure long-term retention of knowledge. Online testing for Academy programs identifies gaps without penalizing participants, and the annual Dweck Stars Awards ceremony tracks promotions and celebrates achievements.
What makes Dweck’s approach distinctive is the belief that every interaction represents a development opportunity. This creates a culture where trust and accessibility define relationships, with employees knowing they can always “just pick up the phone” for support. Mistakes become learning opportunities rather than penalties, and the human experience matters as teams celebrate milestones and support each other through challenges. The success of this approach, while evident in the working environment, is also seen clearly in the numbers as employee retention rates remain high. When you have people with “committed joy and purpose” in their work, the result becomes a multiplier that creates exponential impact.
The results of Dweck’s investment in comprehensive employee development speak for themselves. With high retention rates, employee engagement, and consistently strong resident satisfaction, the company has created a workplace where people want to build their careers.
More importantly, Dweck has built an environment where learning never stops, growth is always possible, and every team member has access to the support and opportunities they need to succeed. It’s this unwavering commitment to people that sets Dweck Properties apart and creates the foundation for lasting success.
