Reaching New Heights: Exploring Movement Climbing, Yoga, and Fitness

October 1, 2024

Just steps away from the Crystal City Metro, an oasis of adventure awaits. Movement Climbing, Yoga and Fitness, with its sprawling acre of rock climbing walls, yoga studios, and fitness facilities, has become a cornerstone of the active and creative community in National Landing. We sat down with Amanda Mahon, Corporate Partnership Supervisor, and Nick Gava, Gym Director, to learn more about this unique space and the passion that drives its community.

From the moment you step into Movement, you’re greeted by an impressive sight: over 350 rock climbing routes spread across 35,000 square feet of climbing walls. “It’s a climber’s paradise,” Nick explains, “but it’s so much more than that. We’re a full-service gym with cardio equipment, weights, yoga studios, group fitness classes, and expert instructors.”

Amanda, a Navy spouse who discovered climbing through her daughter, adds, “What sets us apart is our commitment to welcoming climbers of all levels. Our motto is ‘Come as you are, climb as you are.’ Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced climber, there’s a place for you here.”

The gym’s evolution mirrors the growth of the climbing community itself. Nick, who joined Movement (formerly known as EarthTreks) in 2012, has witnessed this transformation firsthand. “When I started, we were just 12 gyms. Now, we’re 30 strong across the country, making us the largest climbing gym network in the U.S.” But it’s not just about size. Amanda and Nick emphasize the quality of the experience Movement offers. “We’ve really polished our product,” Nick says. “From the front desk to the routes, everything is designed to provide the best possible experience for our members.”

One of the unique aspects of Movement is its commitment to constant change. “Our routes change every 6-8 weeks for bouldering and 10-12 weeks for ropes,” Amanda explains. “It keeps things fresh and challenging for our regulars while always offering something new for newcomers.” The gym caters to all skill levels with a variety of programs. “We have intro classes for beginners, community groups for intermediates, and advanced training for experts,” Nick says. Amanda highlights one group she’s particularly proud of: “I run a group called Fem Over 40. It’s a specific space for women over 40, and it’s been truly valuable. We’ve found it’s an often overlooked population in the climbing world.”

Both Amanda and Nick found their passion for rock climbing in unexpected ways. For Amanda, it was through her daughter’s interest. For Nick, it was a chance suggestion while studying geology in grad school. Now, as climbing partners and colleagues, they embody the community spirit that Movement fosters.

“Climbing is more than just a physical challenge,” Amanda reflects. “It’s a mental one too. When I’m on the wall, all the to-do lists and worries fade away. It’s just me, the problem in front of me, and the incredible clarity that comes with that focus.” Nick agrees, adding, “There’s a spiritual aspect to it. It’s incredibly stressful and physically exhausting, but also deeply peaceful. It’s mindfulness in action.”

The impact of Movement extends beyond its walls. With 4,000 members and 800-900 check-ins per day, it’s a hub of activity in National Landing. “We work with over 40 local businesses regularly,” Amanda says, highlighting their commitment to community engagement. “We’re not just a gym; we’re part of the neighborhood’s fabric.” This sense of community involvement is further emphasized through programs for youth, including after school programs, summer and school holiday camps, and competitive youth athletic teams. Movement’s neighborhood partnership network is also extensive, having welcomed and formed relationships with numerous local businesses such as Good Company Doughnuts, Rasa, Good Stuff Eatery, Tacombi, Commonwealth Joe, PBS, and more!

Looking ahead, Movement has exciting plans. Their annual Halloween Rendezvous on October 25th promises spooky-themed climbs and silly games. On November 11th, they’ll host a Military Appreciation event, offering free access to military families and a climbing competition. And while they’re keeping details under wraps, there’s talk of a fancy “Giving Gala” in the works.

For Dweck residents interested in experiencing Movement, there’s good news: the initiation fee is waived when you sign up in person. Whether you’re an experienced climber or someone looking to try something new, Movement offers a unique blend of physical challenge, mental clarity, and community spirit. Movement also offers their “first class free”, you can sign up here.

As we wrap up our conversation, we ask Amanda and Nick for their favorite post-climb spots in Crystal City. Nick recommends the Water Park or Good Company, while Amanda favors Tacombi. It’s a reminder that at Movement, the adventure doesn’t end when you come down from the wall – it’s just the beginning of a vibrant community experience. So why not reach new heights? Your next adventure awaits just around the corner at Movement.
