Meet Evelyn: A Bright Future in the Making with Urban Alliance
Dweck Properties’ longstanding partnership with Urban Alliance reflects our continued commitment to youth development. Over the years, we’ve worked together to provide talented high school students with meaningful internships and mentorship opportunities, helping them discover their potential and create pathways to successful futures. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Evelyn Ortuno, a remarkable senior at Washington Liberty High School whose journey with Urban Alliance has been nothing short of inspiring.
Evelyn, a first-generation American with a deep passion for mathematics, has lived her whole life in Arlington, Virginia. Her journey to this point has been shaped by her immigrant roots – her parents, originally from Ecuador – and her unwavering dedication to her education. With aspirations of becoming a data scientist, Evelyn is preparing herself for a future that’s as bright as her smile. She’s heading to Hollins University this fall on an impressive full-ride scholarship, eager to explore new opportunities and make new friends.
Evelyn learned about the Urban Alliance program from a close friend at school, whom she met during her sophomore year. They’ve become like sisters over the years, and her friend was so excited about the program that she insisted Evelyn join. That encouragement has opened up a world of new experiences for Evelyn — “I learn something new every day, and I’m loving every minute of it.”
During her internship at Dweck Properties, Evelyn has gained invaluable skills and firsthand knowledge from our experienced maintenance team. Her typical day begins with support tickets from residents, sometimes replacing a lightbulb, other times fixing appliances, or maintaining cooling towers. Every day is different, which keeps things exciting. She especially enjoyed working on a recent project where her team changed the filters in every apartment — a task that gave her a real sense of accomplishment. One of her favorite parts? Interacting with residents when helping resolve their issues. “It’s nice to see how my work makes a difference in their day,” she shares.
Evelyn described one of her most eye-opening experiences as witnessing how the maintenance team fixes complex issues. She’s been impressed by their breadth of knowledge and their problem-solving skills. For example, she watched them address a water pressure problem by cleverly using a hose and the toilet to regulate water flow — a creative solution that made her realize how much skill and ingenuity go into maintenance work.
Evelyn credits her mentor, Antonio Guzman, Maintenance Supervisor at Crystal Plaza, and teammates for making her feel supported and empowered. From learning to communicate her needs to understanding the importance of safety, she’s gained confidence and professionalism that will serve her well in college and beyond. “They always prioritize my safety and teach me step by step,” she shares, emphasizing her appreciation for the caring environment.
This internship has certainly broadened her horizons. Informed by her experiences, Evelyn is now more curious about careers in STEM and public service. While she’s committed to her goal of becoming a data scientist, she appreciates the value of practical skills like problem-solving and safety. Her experience has taught her the importance of customer service, advocating for herself, and staying curious.
Evelyn has learned a lot about professionalism and respect, values she notes are deeply ingrained in her workplace experiences at Dweck. “People hold the door for me,” she says with a smile. “It’s a different culture — more respectful, more courteous — and I’ve learned to carry that into every part of my life.”
In just a few months, Evelyn will start her freshman year at Hollins University, where she’s eager to continue her academic journey. She’s grateful for the opportunities she’s had through Urban Alliance and Dweck Properties, preparing her for whatever the future may hold.
To other students considering joining Urban Alliance, Evelyn’s advice is simple: “Do it! They give you a lot of support, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help.” With every interaction, Evelyn brings gratitude, grace, and a radiant positivity that uplifts everyone around her — a joy to each Dweck resident and team member, leaving a lasting impression that speaks to the bright future ahead of her.
