A Family Affair: Gwenie’s Pastries x Lapu Lapu

January 15, 2026

Neighborhoods come to life through the people and small businesses that call them home. It’s everyday places that create connection, warmth, and a sense of belonging. Embodying this exact spirit is Gwenie’s Pastries and Lapu Lapu, a small business with its newest location in National Landing, at The Gramercy.

Sharing one thoughtfully designed space, Gwenie’s Pastries and Lapu Lapu feel less like two concepts and more like a natural extension of one another. Coffee and donuts alongside breakfast sandwiches, heritage recipes alongside modern twists, and everything rooted in family.

Founded by Gwendolyn Fernandez, Gwenie’s Pastries began more than 20 years ago in a basement as a labor of love. The Filipino bakery was built on tradition, patience, and recipes that many Filipinos instantly recognize as a taste of home. Over time, Gwen began delivering her desserts to Filipino markets across the region, growing a loyal following.

Gwenie’s offers a thoughtfully curated mix of traditional Filipino desserts and modern fusion pastries, all made with premium ingredients and time-honored techniques. From ube-forward treats and pandan-infused cakes to delicate pastries filled with mung bean or red bean, the menu balances heritage with approachability. The bakery also serves Filipino-inspired coffee, teas, and lattes, including seasonal winter offerings like peppermint hot tea and a crème brûlée latte, creating a space that invites guests to linger, whether they’re stopping in for breakfast, an afternoon pick-me-up, or something sweet to take home.

In 2010, Gwen’s children officially stepped in to carry the business forward. Her daughter, Stella Fernandez, joined the operation right out of college, helping transform those familiar desserts into a full café concept. Her son, Chef Ja, pursued his own culinary ventures, including Lapu Lapu, where Gwenie’s pastries remain an integral part of the menu. Today, Gwenie’s Pastries has locations in Rockville, Frederick, and now Arlington, with Rockville serving as the heart of the operation. This is where baking, decorating, and much of the preparation begin in the early hours of the morning.

Though Gwen is now retired and living in Florida, she remains deeply involved. Recipes, ideas, and decisions still pass through her hands, and she continues baking and selling pastries in her local community. “Keeping her passion alive is everything,” Stella shared. “She’s still part of our everyday life here at Gwenie’s.”

Many guests comment on the restraint in sweetness. Cakes, fillings, and icings feel light, balanced, and never overwhelming. It’s intentional. Recipes are still made the same way Gwen did decades ago, ensuring consistency and care in every bite.

“For Filipinos to say, ‘This reminds me of home,’ that’s the goal,” Stella shared. At the same time, the team is thoughtful about introducing new guests to Filipino cuisine. One flavor, one sandwich, one pastry – an invitation to try something new, one dish at a time.

The work begins early, with baking and prep starting as early as 3 AM in Rockville. Donuts are fried fresh daily, while cakes and doughs are prepared, decorated, packed, and delivered across locations. Stella and Chef Ja are constantly on the move, making rounds across their locations to oversee prep, train staff, and manage daily operations, including at Chef Ja’s other concept, Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, where Gwenie’s pan de sal buns also play a starring role.

The second half of this newest location, Lapu Lapu, is a little younger. Born in the middle of the pandemic, Chef Ja set out to create something simple, comforting, and accessible. The idea was straightforward: a breakfast sandwich shop focused on quality, consistency, and flavors that could travel easily.

The first Lapu Lapu location, a 325-square-foot space in Gaithersburg, leaned fully into that vision. Orders were placed at one window and picked up at another. Every sandwich was served on Gwenie’s signature Pan De Sal buns: soft, fluffy, slightly sweet rolls that quickly became a defining element of the menu.

Today, every Lapu Lapu location serves breakfast and lunch daily, offering familiar sandwiches like corned beef, spam, and sausage, egg, and cheese. The crowd favorite? The Bistek sandwich, often compared to a Filipino take on a cheesesteak: thin sliced lemon soy Ribeye, pickled onions, a white American Cheese sauce, garlic adobo mayo, topped with a fried egg.

The menu stays intentionally simple. Soft serve is offered in one flavor only, always Ube, by design. Pan de sal buns are sold by the bag for guests who want to bring a little taste of the bakery home. From 11 AM-7 PM, Lapu Lapu introduces a Filipino smash burger concept, again, all anchored by those same beloved buns.

Even the name carries meaning. Lapu Lapu was a Filipino national hero who famously defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, defending his homeland in the Battle of Mactan. The story, and its symbolism, live on in the restaurant’s name and logo, reflecting a mission to help guests “win their day,” starting with breakfast.

For Stella and Chef Ja, the new Arlington location was always part of the long-term vision. The family already had strong ties to the area, including longstanding relationships within the neighborhood, and Gwenie’s was already delivering to several nearby businesses. The presence of a large Filipino community, combined with Arlington’s energy and growth, made it a natural next step.

When Gwenie’s Pastries and Lapu Lapu opened together over Labor Day weekend last year, the response was immediate. Guests loved the ease of pairing breakfast sandwiches with coffee and donuts, and the space has quickly become a morning staple for locals.

“There’s something special about having two family businesses under one roof,” Stella explained. “It just works.” What sets Gwenie’s and Lapu Lapu apart isn’t just the menu; it’s the balance. Filipino flavors like Ube and Pandan sit comfortably alongside familiar classics, making the experience approachable for newcomers and deeply nostalgic for those who grew up with these pastries.

It’s a rhythm built on trust in their team, in each other, and in the systems they’ve carefully created over years of growth. Above all, Gwenie’s Pastries and Lapu Lapu are guided by a shared value: hospitality. Service is treated as seriously as the food itself. Guests are welcomed warmly, cared for attentively, and invited to return, not just as customers, but as family.

“In Filipino culture, when you come into our home, you’re family,” Stella said. “That’s how we want people to feel here.”

If it’s your first visit, don’t leave without trying the donuts or the ube cheesecake. Pair that with either an iced ube or pandan latte for the full experience. On the savory side, the Bistek and Chorizo sandwiches are longtime favorites that aren’t going anywhere.

Located just across from Costco in The Gramercy’s ground floor space, and within walking distance for many neighborhood residents, Gwenie’s Pastries and Lapu Lapu are a reminder of what makes Arlington special: family-run businesses, cultural richness, and places that feel like home.

We’re proud to have them as part of our neighborhood.
